Are bats rodents?

They have round ears and fuzzy nose, they are often called rats with wings, and someone called them rodent too. People who misunderstand the concept of bat called them rodents. But are they really belong to the rodent family?

Where did they come from?
They have a thin skeleton and have fragile that help them to fly. The scientist has found their teeth, and they said that they are almost 50- million years old. But they are not sure about their age fact because the old bat resembles the modern bats.

Types of bat
Although there are more than 1000 species here we are providing the most common that belongs to the eastern United States:

  • Hoary bat
  • Brown bat (little)
  • Big brown bat
  • Eastern red bat
  • Spotted bat
  • Vampire bat (they are getting popularity within the scientist for the research purpose; they are founded in Mexico, south and Central America. Another type of bats is fruit bat; they are common in Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Are bats rodent?
People who consider them rodents may be shocked to hear they are not, even they did not minor related to the rodents.  Bats are mammals, and when we talk about their internal functioning, they have a 4-chambered heart, a complex brain function, a backbone, mammary glands, and hairs on the external body. Bats have more than 1000 plus species that just make 25% part of all the mammals.  Unlike other animals, they have skills to fly; they stay more active at night as compared to other mammals. Some people even consider them birds due to their flying ability, but no, they are not a bird at all. They fly in a different way as compare to the birds. They are a member of “Chiroptera” means hand-wing. When you look at the wings of the bat, they look similar to the hand like we have opened the hand with open fingers.  Another misconception is they can't see, they can see, but they do not like to use their vision to see around. Instead of using seeing sense, they use a process that is called echolocation. It means they have a strong ability to sense the sound (high- pitched used for echoes that help them to determine their surrounding).

Do bat bite?
Yes, they bite; they can also bite to humans; do not take their minor bite issues; they carry a lot of infectious diseases. They are famous for carrying rabies, and 2 of the cases were also seen that occur due to bat bite. A person can also become a victim of rabies if he has direct contact with the bat saliva. So if you have a bat within your house, try to get rid as soon as possible. The best solution to stop their entry within the house is the use of chimneys and closes all the unwanted holes. Although they do not damage the house or property, they carry disease, so it's better to get rid of them.
